Phumla’s Home: Providing a Safe Haven for Youth
Phumla’s Home, nestled in the vibrant surroundings of Khayelitsha Mandela Park in South Africa, is more than just a building. It is a beacon of hope, a sanctuary for nurturing talent, and a stepping stone towards a brighter future for the many young individuals who walk through its doors.
The project, run by our Foundation, is dedicated to providing a nurturing environment for the youth hailing from the local community and the Abaphumelele orphanage. With a strong focus on holistic development, Phumla’s Home offers vocational, social, artistic, and creative education, aimed at empowering these young individuals with the skills they need for a prosperous future. The goal is simple yet profound – to transform lives and shape destinies.
Project Origins and Background: Phumla’s Story
In South Africa, many children from orphanages face dire circumstances upon reaching the age of 18. Once they age out of the system and finish school, they are often left to fend for themselves, devoid of state support. The traumas they endured in early childhood can make the transition to independent living incredibly challenging, leading many down the path of homelessness, criminal activity, and prostitution. Recognizing this, it becomes clear how crucial it is to provide these young individuals with the stability of family structures for a few more years.
This is the inspiration behind the project “Ekhaya lika Phumla”, named after the orphan girl Phumla. Dr. Jutta Lenz financially and emotionally supported and accompanied Phumla for over two decades. Phumla was a gifted and positive young woman who tragically passed away at just 21 years old in 2019. The cause was severe kidney damage resultant from her HIV medication. Phumla had contracted AIDS in utero and was among the first generation of children to be treated with medication.

What sets Phumla’s Home apart is its long-term commitment to the youth. The project’s focus is not only on providing a safe space but also on enabling these young individuals to grow, thrive, and explore their potential in various fields, including music, art, and vocational training. This comprehensive approach to development is integral to our mission – to create a sanctuary that nurtures talent and helps the youth realize their dreams.
Addressing the Challenge
In South Africa, the plight of young adults who age out of the orphanage system is a daunting one. Once they turn 18, these young individuals are often left to fend for themselves, with no state support and minimal resources at their disposal. The transition to independent life can be harsh and unforgiving, especially when compounded by trauma from early childhood experiences.
Phumla’s Home steps in to bridge this gap. It provides a supportive family structure for these young adults, extending a helping hand during these critical years of their life. The project is a tribute to Phumla, a young orphan girl who, despite her positivity and gifted nature, tragically passed away at a young age.
The Vision for Phumla’s Home
Looking ahead, the vision for Phumla’s Home is to become a self-sustaining entity. The plan is to generate income through various means, such as rental spaces, partnerships with local traders and artisans, and the creation and sale of products. This approach not only ensures the long-term sustainability of the project but also contributes to the local economy, providing opportunities for local traders and artisans to thrive.
Fostering Independence
As the residents of Phumla’s Home transition to independent living, they are encouraged to continue contributing their skills and experiences. This mutually beneficial arrangement not only enriches their lives but also contributes to the growth and expansion of the project.
Home Administration
Ensuring the smooth running of Phumla’s Home is Evelyn Makasi, our dedicated local coordinator. Her role is critical in managing the project on-site, aligning it with our goals, and taking care of the orphans at the Abaphumelele orphanage. Evelyn’s unwavering commitment and tireless efforts are instrumental in the success of Phumla’s Home.
