Some news from the wonderful children and young adults from Abaphumeleli
Some news from the wonderful children and young adults from Abaphumeleli, Home
of Safety in Lito Park, Khayelitsha, South Africa
Nicolaus is a special day for German children in December. Then the guy with the red
clothes and the long white beard comes to their homes or public places to bring the children
gifts.
Not so of course in a township in South Africa but if you are lucky, you have some visitors
during this time and they are willing to join me to my trip into Khayelitsha to visit Evelyns
foster home which I know for nearly 9 yearsnow and I am building tiny houses with my
project manager Rolf Seelinger for the youngsters to build up transition homes.
Transition homes are homes directly in a foster home integrated to give also older children
and young adults till 24 of age a home. Because of their history they are often not mature
enough to live an independent life and need some more years in the protection of a family as
Evelyn Makasi offers these young people and I try to support her as much as I can.
This time I was lucky, and I was accompanied by Antonio, Sybille, Rose and Walter from the
Tango Club La Costura in Kreuzlingen, Switzerland who happened to be here for holidays.
So Saturday the 6 th of December they drove far out with me to Khayelitsha and the children
and youngsters were all their exited, hoping for some Christmas presents and it was lovely to
see how happy they were to be integrated and also get some gifts as other children in their
families with a dad and mom.
Evelyn was able to tell her story and what our goal is to be able to help at least 10 to 15 more
young people who are already on a waiting list. They all have terrible experiences behind
them either in their families or even in institutions where they were abused.
Unfortunately the winter was hard and ruined a lot of stuff at the children’s orphanage. We
need
4 new doors for the rooms because they are rotten.
5 bunker beds each is about 4500 Rand
New concrete floors
Paint for the walls and the ceilings of the boys rooms.
